We started Bobabox because we were spending $8 a cup, five days a week. The math wasn't mathing.
We're Anika and Jay. We met at a boba shop in Kensington Market in 2021 and quickly bonded over the fact that we were both spending way too much money on bubble tea. At one point, Anika was hitting four different shops a week trying to find one that got the pearl texture right.
In early 2023, we started experimenting at home. Ordering pearls from Taiwan, testing different tea varieties, figuring out the right sugar ratios. After about two months of trial and error (and a lot of mediocre batches), we cracked it. The pearls were perfect. The tea was actually good.
Our friends went crazy for it. And then their friends asked if they could buy kits. So we put together some boxes, set up a website, and Bobabox was born.
Our pearls come from a family-run factory in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Our teas are loose-leaf, sourced from a Toronto importer who visits farms personally. No powder, no artificial flavours, no corn syrup.
Every kit replaces 8-10 single-use plastic cups from boba shops. Our packaging is recyclable cardboard. The boba straws we include are reusable stainless steel. Small things, but they add up.
Making boba should be an event, not a chore. We design our kits so that the process is part of the fun. There's a reason people do these at parties and date nights.
